Below is a summary of multiple conversations I have with patients about sleep. I talk about sleep often. You will see why. I believe that a better understanding of sleep creates better sleep.

We spend around a third of our life doing it. So let’s talk about it.

It plays a vital part in keeping us human. Without sleep our brain function declines, we get sick, and we put on weight whilst losing strength. Basically sleep is an underrated super power if we can improve will help be strong, smart, emotionally regulated and it keeps us healthy (not sick). It is so important for us to be able to maintain the busy lives we lead and hold it all together without falling apart.

In this little snippet of the web we will discuss what hormones hep regulate our sleep drive and sleep quality – and after this explain why some lifestyle changes may be more effective than others. It is important to get the basics right before discussing medication and seeing specialists (these may also be necessary!).

The plan here is to get a basic understanding of sleep, it’s importance, and how we can try improve it with the limitations our busy lives place on us.

Why talk about sleep

Sleep is important. We have evolved to spend a significant portion (ideally 6-8 hours) of each day in a state of being “switched off” or fully / partially paralysed. This seems counterproductive to the process of evolution and the survival of our species, which involves activities like out-running predators, reproducing, and gathering food.
